Who does it impact and how?
Child Labour is a severe issue that exists in our world today. An
estimated 215 million children worldwide are made to work with over 129 million
of these being in the agricultural sector. The majority of child labourers in
agriculture work for a family business. These families are so poor that they
often do not have a choice but to make their children work, and cannot pay them.
The reality is that these families will most likely remain trapped in a cycle of
poverty and the children will continue to work, being deprived of the
opportunities that we take for granted.
Since, poverty is the main cause of child labour in agriculture,
families will often not be able to afford to send their children to school. If
the families did not use their children as workers, they would have no source of
income and would not be able to survive. Not only this but most of the areas in
which agricultural child labour occurs are remote, and are lacking in the
resources needed to give a child a quality education. Labourers will probably
never have the opportunity to go to school and get an education, meaning that
they will be trapped in the cycle of poverty as well.
The main dangers that children face when involved in agricultural
labour are:
· Working with heavy machinery, equipment and tools such as knives,
chainsaws, tall ladders, and tractors or trucks
· Repetitive motion injuries that result from physically demanding
work
· Pressure to work fast without breaks and despite
injury
· Having to work with hazardous pesticides
· Heat stress and illnesses from being out in the sun
